Tar Sands, Pipelines, and Clean Energy - A Conversation

Ecology Ottawa and the Nobel Women's Initiative would like to invite you to a riveting night of discussion on Tar Sands, Pipelines in Your Backyard and the Clean Energy Revolution: A conversation with Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams and three other inspiring women.

On Monday, October 28th, join us at the Mayfair Theatre from 7:00-8:30pm, where we have the pleasure of talking with Jody Williams and other visionaries about the threat of tar sands and climate change globally, what action we can take around pipelines locally, and the promise of clean energy as a way forward everywhere.

Also featuring:

Joanna Kerr, Executive Director of Greenpeace Canada
Julia Sanchez, President-CEO of the Canadian Council for International Co-operation

Tinda Sebe-Sikaneta, Local Organizer and West Ottawa resident.

The event is free.

About the speakers:

Jody Williams received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for her work to ban antipersonnel landmines through the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which shared the Peace Prize with her that year. She is an outspoken peace activist who struggles to reclaim the real meaning of peace—human security, not national security. Since January of 2006, Jody Williams has worked to achieve her peace work through the Nobel Women’s Initiative, which she chairs. In 2003, Williams was named Distinguished Visiting Professor of Global Justice, in the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston.

Joanna Kerr is an international human rights activist and the incoming Executive Director of Greenpeace Canada.   She has recently returned from South Africa after serving as the first female Chief Executive of ActionAid International.  Kerr previously served as Policy Director at Oxfam Canada and holds a BA from the University of Toronto and an MA in Gender and Development from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, Brighton, UK.

Julia Sanchez is the President-CEO of the Canadian Council for International Co-operation. She came to  this position with experience in international development management, including working in developing countries. Prior to joining CCIC, she served as Regional and National Campaigns Director for the Global Campaign for Climate Action (GCCA/Tcktcktck.org)  Julia completed a double major in Political Science and Economics as well as an MA in Economics, both from McGill University.

Tinda Sebe-Sikaneta is a concerned resident of Stittsville, a suburb in west Ottawa. Before taking time to raise her three young boys, she worked on environmental and human rights issues at Export Development Canada, and on international trade policy and investment issues at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. She holds an M.A. in International Political Economy from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Ottawa's Carleton University, and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from McGill University in Montreal. She's also a Registered Yoga Teacher.
