Petition for a safer Scott Street

To the City of Ottawa

À la ville d'Ottawa

Scott Street is an important east-west transportation corridor in the City for all modes of transportation. Residents have undergone significant hardship during the construction of LRT. The width of Scott Street creates the opportunity to rebalance the street to make it more attractive for walking and cycling while maintaining the current roadway capacity. We want to ensure the end result is a healthier, more livable and vibrant street.

We, the undersigned, call upon our city councillors and the City of Ottawa to transform Scott Street into a complete street, with dedicated cycling facilities, wider sidewalks and enhanced landscaping on both sides. We believe that our community deserves a street that is safe for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists of all ages and abilities.

The LRT would not have been so disruptive to Scott St., had the LRT returned to the original tracks of the electic railway along Byron. Better yet, we should not have ripped up the tracks in order to accomodate cars. Unfortunately some have to suffer for huge mistakes in local and national railway management. Are the residents of Byron willing to kick in a few extra dollars for the Scott Street development? Seems like a good idea since they were left without the disruption and enjoy the park land. Whereas the rest of Ottawa will have to pony up for Scott St.

I am a very strong proponent of this action. We use Scott St as a main transportation corridor to and from school, work and play. We must not overlook the need to set aside space to ensure safety for pedestrians and cyclists the moment the buses leave Scott St.

    Thank you.

The speed limit on Scott St is 50 km/hr but vehicles travel 60-80 km/hr regularly. There are regular accidents caused by speeding and dangerous driving. It is frightening and dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists due to vehicle speed and the fact that cars have ended up on sidewalks after collisions. We’ve had residents nearly hit by cars as they walk along Scott crossing the side street entrances as vehicles fly off of Scott St around the corners to cut up to Wellington. Hence it’s not very safe to cycle in the cycle lanes or walk on the sidewalks or cross the side streets! Trying to get across Scott in our neighbourhood, by Tunney’s Pasture, can take a long time due to speed and volume of traffic and a complete lack of crosswalk facilities. Pedestrians often have to cross half way and then wait while cars speed by them in the other lane before they can cross the entire way. Tunney’s employees cross in great numbers to get to and from work as well as to go up to Wellington at lunch. Residents cross to walk their dogs at Tunney’s, or go to the river, or use the MUP. Cyclists end up using the sidewalk on the South side of Scott to travel West sometimes when they only have a block or two to travel because it is so ridiculously difficult and unsafe to cross Scott to use the proper side of the street and then have to cross back. We are in desperate need of a safer Scott Street!!!!

Let’s hold the Mayor to his promise of making Scott street a complete street! We should also push that the complete street runs from Bayview to At least Island Park as it makes no sense to stop at Smirle- the middle of our neighbourhood.

As bike traffic and local pedestrian traffic increases in this neighbourhood, we need to ensure that Scott does not remain a highway. Cycling and pedestrian needs should be paramount in the finishing of that street.
