Green Infrastructure Petition

Flooding and severe weather events are happening in Ottawa more frequently than in the past. It's more important than ever before that the City of Ottawa adapt to climate change by systematically scaling up the development of green infrastructure - living and built systems designed to slow down, soak up and filter rainwater. The City has the tools they need to do this, but the speed of climate change means we need to quickly move beyond pilot projects to widescale implementation.

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Ottawa to prioritize green infrastructure development so that we have a healthy, environmentally rich and climate-resilient city.

In 2030, I’ll be 27 years old and looking for a home to buy. I hope I’ll be able to buy with ease and say “Wow, it’s great that the city put in so much green infrastructure a couple years ago to prevent floods around here.”

The most cost-effective priority for Ottawa is its tree canopy: devastated by ash borer and other plagues, threatened by development and poor zoning protection, it provides valuable services in cooling, air conditioning, and wildlife habitat. Ottawa should be assisting the relocation of Kemptville trees abandoned by a short-sighted provincial government, and foresting all highway banks and interchanges, roundabouts, and open City property wherever a sightline is not a safety factor.
