Commuter Cycling Pledge

Cycling to work offers many advantages to cars and public transit - a morning workout, a pass on traffic, and zero carbon emissions. The last point is especially important given that 40% of Ottawa's carbon emissions are from transportation. And yet, only 2.2% of commuters bike to work.

Whether you are an avid commuter cyclist already or have only begun to consider the possibility, we challenge you to incorporate cycling into your daily commute - but we want it to make sense for you. Here are some goals to consider when making your cycling pledge:

- The test run - commit to commuter cycling for the next month.
- Become a cycling ambassador. Already comfortable cycling to work? Tell your friends. Better yet, bring them with you!
- Try winter biking - make the transition from fair-weather to all-weather.
- Or, create your own!

We need to see more people cycling in Ottawa, and we want to know how you plan to do it. Leave us your name, email and a comment beginning with "I pledge," for example "I pledge to cycle to work two days a week until the first snowfall". Sign our commuter cycling pledge, and commit to a personal goal that makes sense for you.

I pledge to better learn the mechanics of the bicycle in order to proactively maintain and repair our families’ bikes. This will keep us safe and on the roads promoting cycling.

I would be great if we had a cycling network from Kanata to downtown. Where we could just cycle safely all the way. It’s hard to get from Kanata to downtown. I hate the cycle paths it’s twice as long to get to work and not worth it it takes to long. We need even better cycling infrastructure or really it’s not worth it.

Got new mittens from MEC and some 45north pogies for my fatbike that I used to commute through the winter last year…bring on the snow! (My route takes me across my two favourite bike infrastructure projects in Ottawa-the Adàwe bridge and the Laurier bike lanes!).

    cheers,

    Dave

I already walk to work most days, and I will continue to do so, weather permitting. Walking is even better for the environment than cycling, and much safer.

Yes to more bike parking. Yes also to no more “wheel bender” racks, and Yes to correct installation of racks for maximum use! Many racks end up against walls and bikes can only be parked on one side. Many examples of this around Ottawa!
